Vazhakulam Block Panchayat
Towards Sustainable Development Through Public Participation
History of Formation
Vazhakulam Block Panchayat is situated in Kunnathunad Taluk of Ernakulam District, Kerala. It was established in February 1968 to coordinate rural development activities and promote the social and economic progress of the people in the region.
The Block Panchayat system aims to plan rural development, coordinate development programmes, improve basic infrastructure and enhance the quality of life of the people. Over the years, it has continued to play an important role in coordinating development activities in the surrounding rural areas.
Panchayati Raj System and Administration
The 73rd Constitutional Amendment of India provided constitutional recognition to Panchayati Raj institutions. Subsequently, the Kerala Panchayat Raj Act, 1994, strengthened the framework for local self-government in Kerala.
The three-tier Panchayati Raj system consists of Grama Panchayats at the village level, Block Panchayats at the intermediate level and District Panchayats at the district level. Vazhakulam Block Panchayat functions as an intermediate local self-government institution, coordinating development activities among the Grama Panchayats within its jurisdiction.
The administration functions through elected representatives and officials. Development priorities are identified based on local needs, and programmes are planned and coordinated to support the overall progress of the region.
